A mineral railway and industrial landscape
Nestled near the quiet village of Templand, Corncockle Quarry stands as one of the most historically and geologically significant quarrying sites in southern Scotland. Operating primarily throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the quarry was a bustling hub of industry powered by a dedicated workforce drawn from nearby communities, including Lochmaben, Lockerbie, and the surrounding countryside.
The quarry harvested fine-grained, warm Permian red sandstone formed roughly 250 to 280 million years ago, when the region was covered by vast, arid desert dunes1.
In the 1820s, quarrymen splitting the sandstone layers made a remarkable palaeontological discovery: fossilised trackways pressed into the ancient dune surfaces. Initially thought to be “dinosaur footprints,” palaeontologists later identified them as the fossil tracks (ichnites) of pre-dinosaur Permian tetrapods, such as early synapsids and reptiles wandering across desert sands.
The discovery attracted major scientific interest, famously documented by Rev. Dr William Buckland2 and Sir William Jardine3 4, making Corncockle a key reference site for early vertebrate trace fossils.

Corncockle Quarry is now called Dunhouse Quarry and stone is currently extracted by Dunhouse5.
Corncockle sandstone was prized by stonemasons for its durable quality, warm reddish hue, and ease of carving. Thousands of tonnes were extracted and transported via local rail networks.
Scottish Cities: The stone dramatically shaped the urban landscapes of Glasgow and Edinburgh, utilised in grand Victorian tenements, civic structures, and public monuments[vi]. Among the builds are the Caledonian Hotel, many Victorian tenements and Leith Academy in Edinburgh. In Glasgow Cambuslang Parish Church and Victorian tenements.
Transatlantic Export: Beyond the UK, Corncockle red sandstone was shipped across the Atlantic. It contributed to the iconic “brownstone” architecture of New York City and other American east-coast cities during late 19th century building booms. It was used in New York architecture – in American terminology, the label “brownstone” was applied broadly to any reddish or brown-hued sandstone used as an exterior façade veneer. This is why today (2026) Glasgow is used to represent ‘Gotham City’ in the Batman movie franchise!
Constructed around 1884 by contractor Robert Young7, the Corncockle Mineral Railway—known locally as the Jardine Hall Mineral Railway in Lochmaben Parish was a masterclass in 19th century industrial engineering. Built as a standard gauge line, its sole purpose was to link the remote red sandstone workings of Corncockle Quarry to the wider world via the Caledonian Railway mainline at Nethercleugh Station.
Before the railway’s arrival, moving massive, dressed blocks of sandstone required heavy horse drawn carts struggling over unpaved rural roads.
Operated by the Corncockle Quarry Company, the new mineral branch bypassed these logistical bottlenecks.
From the bustling goods yard at Nethercleugh, the line ran northward directly into the heart of the quarry, allowing steam locomotives to haul thousands of tonnes of stone to Glasgow, Edinburgh, and ports bound for North America.


In its heyday Corncockle Quarry was a major industrial site employing many local people, some lived nearby and others travelled in from Lockerbie and Lochmaben, making particular use of the railways once they were operational.
This Ordnance Survey Map covers the working quite extensively – the network of branches for the Mineral Railway itself is testament to the importance of this quarry – the rail lines have been highlighted to aid viewing.

The most striking surviving feature of the line is the Corncockle Quarry Railway Bridge (often called the Jardine Hall Bridge), spanning the River Annan:

Due to its proximity to the historic seat of the Jardine family, the bridge is occasionally confused in local references with nearby Spedlins Tower the ancient seat of the Clan Jardine.
Today, the bridge holds Category B-listed status9, recognized as a vital surviving monument to southern Scotland’s 19th-century transport infrastructure.
Sitting opposite Spedlins Tower and beside the railway line lies the remains of the Railway Cottage occupied by the Locomotive Driver John Gilroy and his family.

Regular rail operations along the branch came to an end before the outbreak of the Second World War as road transport began to dominate freight logistics. Though the tracks were lifted, quarrying at Corncockle has continued intermittently into the 21st century. Some of the abandoned rails still lie below the Engine House.
Captain Ronald Charles Cunnigham-Jardine10, as a child lived the boyhood dream of playing with trains, as the son of the owner of a railway!
It is said that as a child he would join the engine driver and ride the footplate of the engine as it went about its tasks.
While the quarry now relies on modern transport and operates without an active rail connection, the surviving earthworks, trackbed, and lattice girder bridge across the River Annan stand as an enduring tribute to the stonemasons, navvies, and engineers who built Dumfriesshire’s industrial golden age.
Any railway and quarrying operation in that time depended on a large and varied workforce.

Nethercleugh Station11 opened on 10 September 1847 on the Caledonian Railway’s main line, located about three miles north of Lockerbie.
The station had two platforms and served a rural district that included the Jardine Hall estate.
It was important for both passenger and goods traffic; particularly mineral freight associated with nearby quarries.
The station closed completely in 1960, and the site has since been redeveloped for industrial use as part of Lockerbie Sawmills. Only a former railway cottage remains as physical evidence of its existence.


From the goods yard at Nethercleugh, a standard-gauge mineral railway ran northward to Corncockle Quarry, operated by the Corncockle Quarry Company.
This branch was crucial in moving heavy stone loads to the national rail network for onward distribution.
In 1851 Station Master was David Wright, 39, married to Jannet Renwick, 29, they had three children Elizabeth, 5, Jmes, 3 and Janet, 1.
In 1871 the Station Master was Thomas Mackarrveth Stoddard, 57, married to Janet Little, 55. He was still there in 1881 but was now a widower, Janet died in 1874.
In 1891 Thomas had been replaced by William Whitecross, 29, he was married to Mary White, 29, and they had a son Thomas, 1.
By 1901 the Station Master was Andrew Hastie, 31, he was married to Margaret J Thomson and they had two children, Elizabeth G, 3, and Jeannie H, 1.
after the last train ran.
Together, the Dumfries – Lochmaben – Lockerbie line and the Nethercleugh – Corncockle Mineral Railway illustrates how railways shaped rural Dumfriesshire.
They supported agriculture, enabled major quarrying enterprises, connected small communities to national networks, and left a lasting imprint on the landscape long after the last train ran.
